Thanks for taking the time to test that. The code you have above will always return the currently selected Explorer item regardless of whether it was the item that was right-clicked or not. They only happen to be the same item if you right-click the currently selected item in the Explorer but this cannot be guaranteed.

This confirms the issue I have in being able to determine the item that the context menu command was fired on. FYI I have also posted on MSDN and just received a reply that indicates what I am trying to achieve is currently not possible:

I have added the command in and the Context in this case is a Explorer and the Selection object of the explorer object has 1 item in its collection.

Ah ha - very interesting indeed, thanks for taking the time to check it out. I just tested your code myself and can confirm I do indeed get a selection in this case.

However, could I impose on you to try it a little differently? Could you try repurposing the existing idMso="Reply" command and testing the same thing in the onAction handler.

Interesting. I just added a context XML blob to my XML and wired it to a method and the control.Context was a selection item.

My XML for RibbonXAddin:

Yes, I have seen a number of descriptions that say the context should be a selection. However I only ever get an Explorer object back for the context menu (a debug break has confirmed this). No one else seems to have this problem so maybe I'm doing something wrong - thanks, I'll keep looking into it...

I have not had a chance to play with the context menu in Mail yet. According to MSDN the Context should be a Selection object. I would recommend dropping into debug and droppping a break in to see what the makeup of the Context is.

Nice one. You don't happen to know how to determine the right-clicked Item in the case where the Ribbon command is raised from an Item context menu. The e.Control.Context in this case is still an Explorer object but explorer.Selection[1] cannot be used because right-clicking an Item in Outlook 2010 does not select the object.

You cannot replace it just like that. This method follows the signature of the control click event. This should be called by a ribbon bar button click or like event.
